Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is defined by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, as a developmental disability, caused by differences in the brain. People living with ASC may have difficulties with social interactions and communication and display restrictive and repetitive behaviours or interests. People with ASC may have different ways of learning, paying attention, processing information, and moving. They may feel overwhelmed by loud noises and bright lights. However, the definition of ASC “has changed over the decades”.

As autism is a spectrum each person may have a unique experience and people with ASC have different levels of intelligence, some may require support with daily tasks such as personal care or assistance with mobility, whilst some have average or above average intelligence and require less physical support and may require support and encouragement with social interactions. The cause of autism is not clear and not an illness that needs a cure, people living with ASC can live fulfilled lives, with support.

Acquired Brain Injury and Mental Health
